Variable valve timing

Recently there has been traffic on the q-list about the cost of 
adjustable valve timing gears, both static and dynamic.  I think I 
understand how a statically adjustable gear can be used to more 
precisely align the cam timing.  I ask the assembled multitude for 
comments on what advantages and disadvantages a dynamically variable 
valve timing gear would be expected to provide, particularly with 
respect to the NG (non-turbo) engine with its attendant Audi 
determined, electronically controlled, mixture and spark timing.
