oil filler-cap effect on idle--how much?

The way to find these leaks is with an unlit (!) propane torch. 
Wave it over 
the hoses, etc., until the engine's note changes.  There's your
leak.

I tried that and it doesn't work. I even stuck the nozzle of the
propane torch into the intake and no change in engine speed
at all. What's up? I thought this was the ultimate leak finder.
