Plug appearances

Put a new set of Bosch tri-electrode plugs into my '92 100S this evening. The
old NGK's had approximately 20k on them. They looked in exceptionally bad
condition. The electrodes looked badly corroded or caked with a whitish
substance. A couple of them also had the appearance of having an oily
subatance on the electrodes. On the outside of two of the plugs, there
appeared to be some charring of some kind. I've changed plugs before in my
old Maxima, and never seen any of this before. Any explanations for these
occurrences? TIA.
