Fuel pump failure???

 If and when my fuel pump "fails", will the car die, or will I lose power as I've heard 
some say they've experienced? My car is an 89' 80q with 128k miles and a very noisy 
fuel pump. At times (usually after long trips) it becomes even louder than usual. At 
this point I'm waiting for something to happen before I replace it, since I've also 
heard others say they replaced their noisy pump with a new one that's just as noisy. So 
what's the real scoop?
