BMW 'net info provoking bomb question again...

I've searched the archives for this and cannot find a definitive answer.  I
also called a BMW dealer and asked and they admitted that they don't
know.  So here it is:

Is it possible to replace the bomb on my '86 5KCSTQ with a less
expensive BMW unit?  

I think I remember Paul Timmerman saying that it was possible for the
earlier Ur-Qs, but what about the later cars?  

It would be a boon if it were possible...the BMW dealer quoted me a bomb
at $130 or so.
