'85 or '86 for turbo swap

OK, I know I've asked this before, but something that was said to me has
confused me.

For a donor turbo motor from a 5k, the oldest year to get the "updated"
stuff is '86, not '85, right?  There is a cheap '85 5kt for sale that
needs a trans.  It would be perfect, unless it's not as good as an '86.

Only plan on doing it once, so short of a 20v turbo, I want to get the
best bang for the buck as I can.  Emphasis on the buck, by necessity.
