turbo
Steve,
I saw your post and had a few observations.
"I've got an 84 5kst with one of those bastard non watercooled turbos. It's
my second one and I'm starting to believe that even with cooling down and
1000k mile oil changes the thing won't last."
I have/had 2 of these type turbos in use in an 81 TQC and a 5000TQ, both,
thankfully, were/are running fine and trouble free. While I know a bunch of
people think the oil cooled only are short lived, all I can say are my
examples are not. I do use synthetic oil, but I do not go thru extended
cooling down rituals as some.
"it might
sieze....repeatedly. I'm surprised that the turbo I pulled off of the car
was dated the year it made meaning that it lasted since it was made"
Not sure what you mean here as seized is usually permanent
"I saw
a Turbo City ad saying that they offer rebuild kits for the turbos. Does
anybody have experience with these kits? How much? Talk to all
later........ Bye....Steve"
84 5ksT 1.8 bar
In New England there are a few good rebuild places, NE Turbo is one and
another here in NH who assures me they can rebuild our turbos off the car for
a "few hundred $'s" If your bearing are toast I would think some sort of
press is needed to get them on & off the shaft, leaving out a lot of DIYer's.
Then again your sig says 1.8bar, I would think that's beyond pretty good for
a failing turbo. You'll find NE Turbo in ec and others, I can get you the #
for the NH shop if you like.
Good Luck
Mike
