... good heads up, Ti!  Another thing to look for is broken or loose 
brackets, e.g. the air conditioning compressor brackets.  A friend of 
mine has a GTI and was complaining about a loss of power.  He mentioned 
in passing that one of his A/C compressor brackets had broken.  I sug-
gested that he fix the bracket, as the compressor might whack the side
of the engine and sound like a ping.  He repaired the bracket and sol-
ved the problem.
