rear defrost/rear foglight buttons

Hoping a fellow q-lister can help me. Almost a year ago I bought a
(pre-owned) 94 100S Wagon. Love it! No problems what so ever in the past
year (wish my 318ti was so reliable). Just one question concerning the
rear defrost and rear foglight buttons.

Just above the radio, there are the following (left to right): driver's
seat heater dial, rear defrost button, rear foglight button, 4-way hazards
button, passenger's seat heater dial, and coin holder. When I start the
car, the buttons light up except for the rear defrost button. When I put
the parking lights on, the same. After turning the headlights on, the rear
defrost button lights up.

I think the rear defrost button light is wired incorrectly. I believe the
rear foglight button light should perform this way because the rear
foglight is only operational when the headlights are on.

Does anybody agree with me? I talked it over with the local service
department and they say the button lights are operating correctly
(according to their wiring diagrams).

If I'm not mistaken, the coin holder is a dealer installed option. When
the coin holder is not installed, the buttons are spread out more (so the
passenger can reach the seat heater dial easier). I figure when the coin
holder was installed, they may have inadvertently goofed the wiring.

Sorry so long. Thanx in advance for your help.

Scott.
