But be gentle at the end of the rack's travel.  You can hose a rack by
slamming it into the end of it's travel (which you can really only do when
the wheels are off the ground).

Also, you should be able to grasp the tie rods and shake them (firmly)
back-n-forth and up-n-down to feel any play (and hear any clunk).

Anothre thing I haven't seen anybody mention: a broken or loose sway bar
(or strut) mount.
