Re: Misc. V8 questions (V8 brakes)
Audi issued service bulletin to replace the original brakes with the set up
(including struts) used on the 200's. They only offered this to those owners
that complained about premature warping of the rotors. They did not advertise
this. Some reports that I read stated that this reduced the unsprung weight
by about 140 lbs. This is a substantial weight savings.
I just purchased a 90 v8 with 33k miles that had the rotors replaced twice -
once by Audi prior to the sale of the car and once by Audi when the car was
past warranty but with only 21k miles. The Audi dealer charged the original
owner for that work. Both times they were replaced with the standard V8 setup
not the 200 setup.
After I purchased the car I had my very trusted Audi dealer inpect the car.
The service rep stated that she could detect a very slight vibration and
suspects that there is a minor warp.
You are absolutely correct when you stated that the V8 is a heavy car. It
seems that the brakes require considerable muscle.
I'm considering pressing Audi to do the conversion. I would appreciate any
comments from those that had the conversion.
