Gentleman,
A noisy fuel pump means it needs replacing (I've put in some new noisy pumps,
but if it "became" more so, heed the warning).  On the 88 5ktq, a removal of
the screen material (per audi TSB) might quiet the pump, though probably too
late for that to work.  There is a coating in the tank that clogs the filter
material.  Remember, on the 5ktq the pump is in the tank to stay cool.  That
means you want to make sure it's submerged, which is accomplished totally
above a 1/2 tank.

Re both cars.  I believe it was Glen Powell that posted that he delayed
replacing his pump when it got noisy.  A very detailed description of the
shrapnel he had to purge from his fuel system.  If the schrapnel gets into
the FD, one might wish that the FP warning should have been heeded sooner.
 Neither car takes more than 1hour to do the job.
