I thinking changing the fluid is a good practice. I got my '91 200q with
86K on it and the shifting was a little notchy. It still is, I think it's
from a clutch not fully disengaging, probably the slave cylinder.
However, after I changed the fluid, the shifting was MUCH smoother. On my
old '87 5KSQ, I had the fluid changed and it got more notchy. They used
regular dino oil. I believe they came stock with synthetic, about a year
later I changed to Mobil 1 tranny fluid, the shifting was EXTREMELY SMOOTH.
To find Mobil 1 synthetic, look in the yellow pages under lubricants and
find a distributor. Call them and find who they sell it to so you can buy
it. About 10-12 dollars per quart, my '91 took almost 3 quarts for the
tranny. I would have an oil change place do it, it's a lot easier. Make
sure they get the fill plug out first, there are two drain plugs, one in
the front of the tranny and one at the rear. Only one fill plug.....
