Gaa-Gaa over GALA

Greetings all.
     Could somebody tell me exactly how the GALA feature on the Bose 
audio system is supposed to work? I have read the less than helpful 
owner's manual insert, but what the radio does and what the book says 
it's supposed to do are two different things. The readouts on the front 
panel of the unit are even different. If anybody has figured this puzzle 
out, I'd appreciate a pointer to a FAQ or a note of assistance.
