Steve, the stock position for an Audi oil temp sender is in the oil
pressure relief valve, which is a large looking bolt to the left side of
the oil pump (just behind the big pulley). The old style, which used
smaller threads, was used on '80-83 5000 turbos and uses a 170 deg C gauge.
The new style which seems to have a much larger thread size is used on
4000 quattros. Haven't looked at 84s but my 87 uses the wide style. Oil
pressure gauge requires a sender which replaces the stock oil pressure
switch. The correct one made by VDO includes a switch for the idiot light.
Gauge reads 0-150 psi (or 10 bar). New sender and gauge should run < $100.
Older stock 4000Ss have both and you might be able to scrounge one up for
< $20. Careful on which switch you replace. Most Audis have 2-a 1.8bar
which closes at pressure, and a 0.3bar which is closed at low psi oil
pressure. If you use a 4000S sender, replace the white (1.8) switch. The
stock oil pressure gauge reads 0-80 psi (or 5 bar), so it will read full
scale mostly when normal. BTW, I recall VDO makes an oil temp sender that
fits in the oil drain bolt, but I don't know the p/n.

HTH,
Tony
