It's a good idea, but not mandatory.  I changed mine twice in 3 tankfuls
(3total).  Hoping that solves the problem.  So far so good 10k+ since repair.
 Also, running techron thru the tank will help, but techron should be
accompanied by an oil change soon afterwards as well.
