My (4k style) instrument panel gauges are definitely lit from the front.  Their
panels are made of (opaque) metal.  The two sidelights for the gauges are on the
rear, but the light is sent down two tubes and reflected down at the gauge faces.
The three gauge setup in the console works the same way - they look backlit, but
the light is reflected around the circumference onto the face.  Neat trick.
