88 5KSQ-Engine Stall at Speed.

Greetings all,

        My (new to me) '88 5kSQ(98K) is acting up! My father was driving it
this weekend, and after 45 min or so of hwy crusing the engine backfired
and shut off on him(electrics on,  just no engine)!   He pulled over,
turned it off and restarted, and a few miles/min later the same thing
happened again!  This time he pulled over, turned everything off and waited
a couple of seconds and started up again, after which it ran fine.
Realizing that the fuel was down to 1/4 tank, he drove to a gas station and
filled it up(15 gal, thanks dad!)-this being the only thing he could think
of off hand.  Since then it has run fine for him and for me.  What gives?
Should I worry? Since I am still under the warranty period from the used
car dealer, and  I would like them to fix this-any Ideas?  (Unrelated-They
have already replaced the temp guage and sender, a bunch of bulbs, a rear
tire, and lubricated the rear ball joints--and I think that they are
starting to hate me.)

BTW-If it was not for the SUV that completely crunched my '90 Subaru Legacy
LS last month, I would not have joined the wonderful world of Audi!!!
