Well, that's the same as AC house wire fusing, which has been my rule of
thumb.  The wire doubles in area/current capacity with each double step of AWG
(ie 14 to 10).

I realise now that the alternator mod simply doesn't mention that the stock
alternator to battery (in the Audi one wire to battery, one to fuse box - each
8 GA! - been meaning to fish through replacements for those!) wire is still
attached to the alternator.  As was pointed out, the 16 and 18 GA wires are
just for sensing system voltage and energizing the stator coils appropriately.
