It is for those of us who 1) weigh more than 200 pounds or 2) install a
5-pt. harness in the car then cinch it down tightly to hold them in place
for autocross/track events.

See nos. 1 & 2 above ... I guess it depends upon what you consider abuse. ;^)

Eventually ... at least they always have for me. If you get another seat,
strip it down and run some extra welds along the seam where the pan joins
the frame. I did this with the last one I had and it lasted three years ...
might have lasted longer but I gutted the frame to use as the basis for the
adjustable seat in my racecar.

Just swap upholstery with a used seat ... this is so easy, I wouldn't bother
trying to fix the broken one.

You need to buy a Coupe or two-door 4k seat; the four-door models don't have
the latch to release the seat back. Also, some (but not all; I forget which
are which) VW Rabbit seat bases will fit the Coupe ... this might be the
most cost-effective source for parts.
