That is the connector for checking the frequency valve duty cycle. It should be
50% at idle (or 45 degrees on a 4 cylinder dwell setting). I've seen other "ideal"
numbers, but usually from people with turbos and tweaks.

the brown/red wire does the usual Audi thing of daisy chaining grounds from one
device to the next.... in this case (in my latest theory) since it is brown with a
color stripe, it's a switched ground.

I really like those diagrams. The sequential numbers are to identify each item on
the diagram. Look up your item by description along the bottom and the number
associated with it is that sequential number. Also when a wire has to "jump" to
another part of the diagram, there is a little square box with the index number
where it goes to, and at that other track will be a little box with the track where
it came from. These do not indicate connectors, they just simplify the diagram.
My only beef is that the fuse box tracks, in the top section of the diagram, are a
bit hard to follow from page to page. I wish they were dotted/dashed lines or
something. Thinking of coloring mine in but then they'd be harder to copy.
