84 5kt auto trans.

I'm hoping someone can give me some input on this one.

I rebuilt the auto trans in my 84 5kt carefully following the Bentley
instructions.

When I finished, everything seemed to work great until I tried to back
up.

It will back up but it is as if it is trying to move forward and backward
at the same time.  Reverse will overpower it but it is like a clutch pack
is not releasing to allow reverse to work properly.  It also doesn't seem
as bad on initial startup but after pump pressure and temp are up, 
it really creaks going backwards.

Any input will be helpful as I would prefer not to completely disassemble
unless
absolutely necessary.
