Best manual box to fit 1990 Audi Turbo (200T)???

Hi!

So people here are willing to help me mod the ECU on my 1990 Audi
Turbo. But I've got a fair warning about the automatic gearbox on
these things, they're supposed to be running at the maximum potential
already in stock. If I'm going to convert then I'd like to know what
gearbox is suggested for the front-wheel drive 2.2 5-cyl machines.
Anybody fitted a Mercedes 5-speed manual from a W123 to any of these
machines? (I like the up and to the left reverse, as opposed to the
VW down and to the left model that keeps popping into reverse everytime
one tries to select first gear! :))

If I do a mod to boost my machine to 1.8 bar boost pressure on the
turbo and change the computer can't I still run the automatic as I
won't be pushing it that often?
