variable vane turbo

This is somewhat related to the turbo threads going around but rather
than
attach it as a response to one of them, I thought I start fresh.

I remember a few years ago, Chrysler corp. was using a variable vane
turbo
which would spool up quickly but pump a lot of air at higher rpms.  Has 
anyone had any experience, tried one on an Audi, or anything like that?
I'd be interested to hear.  thanks
