urq vacuum hose simplification - Anyone BTDT?

I was under the hood of my '82 turbo quattro coupe last night poking around.
There are miles of vacuum lines under there!  I can't believe how many taps
are coming/going from the intake manifold!

Has anyone gone through and done a thorough simplification of the vacuum
hoses in the urq?  I would like to remove as many as possible and replace
the remainder with new tubing in an effort to ease trouble shooting.  Anyone
have a reasonable explaination for some of the "wackiness" of some of the
vacuum devices?
