It was when I checked back in '95 ... the problem was that the shipping cost
for a light but bulky part (such as a racing seat) was BIG bucks.  I seem to
recall being quoted $200 to ship a $400 seat ... I also found the cost of
buying my Compomotive wheels from the U.S. importer was only marginally more
costly ($75 for a set of four) than ordering them direct from the UK. 

Also, customs duty is an iffy thing ... I've had small packages arrive via
the Post Office with a duty charge (as I recall, it's 4.7% of stated value)
yet other larger packages shipped via UPS have arrived duty free.  I think
if you're dealing with a larger supplier and/or someone who has a good rep
(Demon Tweeks, for instance) and the price you're being quoted is
competitive, go for it...
