Finding bad Wheel bearings/TIP...
Use a mechanic's stethoscope - far safer if you are going to do this.
In fact, it's what my mechanic said they do...
How do you put a stethoscope onto a spinning wheel??
You don't have to get 'that' close to hear it with the 'naked' ear.
As an Audi/Vw technician, the majority of wheel bearing nosies occur when
corning and unloading the bad bearing. Yes, sometimes this isn't the case,
but MOST of the time it is.
Tip for the day....DO not roll your car around without a CV joint in place.
Rolling the car without the compression of a tightened outer CV joint most
likely will damage the bearing. At our garage, we save bad joints. gut them
and use them as blanks should we need to roll a car around without the axle
in place.
