Is a bigger exhaust better?

Hi!

I need to replace my back box on my 1990 Audi 200T. I got screwed
when I bought the car 3 months ago in that the back box had a hole
in it and the salesperson put a cheap rear silencer on. Now the
thing is developing a hole at the welding point. This comes from
the rear box being a 45mm or 50mm while the entire exhaust system
is in fact a 57mm system. I will have to replace the thing as the
car does have an annoying beat to its exhaust note. So if I'm
going to have the job done I was just wandering if it would be better
to go on to a 67mm system or keep with the 57mm piping system.

I have heard that it is not always an advantage to fit a larger bore
exhaust system. What is opinion and experience of fitting a larger
bore exhaust system? Obviously it will be louder, but what about
performance?

Another thing is these "performance back boxes". These have large
diameter pipes surrounded by what look like very small absorption
type mufflers, usually about 2 to 5 centimetres larger in diameter
compared to the pipe (a very small silencer, indeed). What are the
advantages of fitted these apart from a throatier/louder exhaust
note?

What are "resonator type tailpipes"?
