Re: Diff lock problem

<It will only go forward (or reverse) now if I have the center diff
locked (or the center and rear diffs locked). I can put it into gear,
but nothing happens. It just revs, and I hear a grinding/churning noise
from the rear (or the center?). >snip

Oww, ouch! That is nothing like having your window stop going up and
the dash lights burning out. That sounds like a real bummer!

Want to sell it for parts...kidding.

It really sounds as if your rear diff is fried. Without the center
locked, it was doing what diffs usually do, that is, send power to the
wheels with the least resistance. The center lock, of course, locks the
front and rear so the front is driving the car now.

My rear diff makes noises like it is going to die someday soon, and I
always contemplated whether I could limp home by locking the center. I
guess that question is answered. I also figured that if it did die, and
I didn't have the cash to fix it right away, I could probably get away
with removing the drive shaft between the center diff and the rear diff.
All theory.

Please keep us updated. I always consoled myself with the idea that an
Audi diff would probably bolt in. Tell me if I am right. I figure they
are quite plentiful in the used market and can't be too expensive.

We're with you brother, even if your girlfriend has left you because she
hates your car.

Matthew.
