Bose Radio

Be careful. Hildesheim is _NOT_ a Blaupunkt factory, but merely one of their
model names - Brauschweig and Neckarsulm (home of the ur-quattro) being others.

In relation to the _original_ Quattro design goals, all of this is irrelevant.
The radio concept that was developed in parallel with the ur-quattro was
designed by a professor of ergonomics at Munich University and realised by
Philips Autoradio (in Wetzlar - coincidentally the home of Leica cameras) as
the AC 990/994.

Unfortunately, Philips had _ZERO_ brand cachet as a car radio manufacturer. It
amuses me somewhat, occasionally, to see list members who can see straight
through BMW's image but can't get past Blaupunkt. The AC 9xx series was the
electronic version of the technological advance in the quattro.

The AC 994 was designed for the German version of the ur-quattro (it had full
ARI support) with the AC 990 being intended for export markets. The first ur-
quattro I drove, in 1981, was fitted with an AC 994 programmed for HR3, SWF3,
BR3, NDR2, SDR1 and WDR2. Apart from the 'programme' functions, it had full
programmabilty on the VHF, medium wave and long wave bands, and covered the 49m
short wave band too.

The AC 9xx series was a masterpiece of ergonomics, designed to be operated by
the driver of a high-performance car. A great deal of the functionality was
automated, and many of the controls were multi-function. This led to a neat,
elegant and simple facia design - exactly what the 'in-car entertainment'
buying public doesn't want.

So Audi had to fit Blaupunkt. Or Bose, depending on local perceptions.
