Coughing Audi 5000s
First time caller and I will say, compared to the BMW list and the
Triumph list, the Audi list is hands down top of the heap….
My first Audi is an 84 5000s (all leather, no rust!) that has 130,xxx
miles on it, and was purchased for the bargain basement price of 300
bucks. I even drove it home. It had, however, a horrendous power
steering pump leak, which, unfortunately, I attempted repair upon by
adding Prestone stop leak. (Wasn't on the list then….oops.) I bought a
hydraulic pump from Autobahn Performance (good, quick service, with
extra bolts and washers) and reinstalled it but before I dump the
precious Mineral oil based fluid in and start it up, I was thinking it
might not be a bad thing to drain the entire system. Looking through the
archives of this list have really been fruitless, though I was able to
drain the reservoir and main hoses…I'm kind of worried about the rack
and or Pressure accumulator, and since draining is free, I'm willing to
put some time into doing it right….suggestions welcome…
The car had been sitting for a few months outside, and I haven't really
had a chance to drive it other than limping home. It was in need of new
CV joints (I bought two axle assemblies for 88 bucks apiece, rebuilt)
and spent 8 hours and a broken socket putting them in. It also needed a
heater blower, which was frozen and would blow the fuse every time I put
it in. (50 bucks from the local auto recyclers, 99 day warranty)
Finally, the exhaust pipe seems to cough out a bit of water and sludge
mixture when the gas is applied and I'm not sure what this might be.
Condensation? It has been sitting a while. The oil looks good, and
doesn't leak, no watery cloudiness, and nothing comes out unless I gun
the engine. The fluid seems kind of oily, watery and dirty. Everything
else works on the car, and cheap advice would appreciated as winter
approaches and this is my winter car.
