We have had a couple of instances of propane being used for property
protection in Yorkshire in the last year or so. It seems that the practice of
locking up easily stolen items in steel cargo containers for protection on
unattended sites has actually made things easier for the thieves, as all the
stuff is in one place and all they have to do is cut through the walls. To
stop this, propane canisters have been 'stored' inside the containers up
against the walls, with the result that any attempt to cut through with oxy or
portable power saws ends rather quickly in a big flash. In one case, the
police were able to trace the culprit by a kind of 'pin the tail on the
donkey', matching the fingers found at the crime scene with their list of
suspects.
