In the late 1950's there was a light-hearted but perceptive book about 
America, _How to Be a Swell Guy_ by social commentator George Mikes, a 
naturalized British subject originally from Hungary. Somewhere in there he 
said, "An Englishman will tell you proudly that his car is 11 years old and
 has 80,000 miles; an American would be ashamed." I guess I have the
English  attitude in spite of being American--maybe it's my Scottish
ancestry!
