quattro mystery

Quattro masters,

I have a '97 A4 1.8TqMS with a Hoppen chip.

I've noticed that under certain conditions (accelerating hard out of a
corner or damp streets) that I can get the tail to step out in first gear.
(yahooo!) I know the basics of how quattro works but how/why would the tail
come out? I assumed that when the rear lost grip the diff would transfer
power to the front (up to 75% someone told me) and the tail would come back
in-line. It's fun to get the tail out after 12 yrs of WC VWs but I'm
curious. Btw, tire pressures are correct.

Thanks.
