'88 80: Speedo intermittent

Hi all,

Since about a year the speedo of my 1988 80 occasionally dies when
accelerating away from a traffic light. Function is restored with a light
tap on the instrument panel glass, and odometer and tach are unaffected by
the malfunction.
Recently, it's started to happen more and more often, and today I couldn't
pull away from a light without tapping the instrument glass.
In short, it's starting to get irritating.

I know these things are electronic, but what does list wisdom say of this
malfunction? Could I get away with disassembling the dash, cleaning
contacts and reassembling, or am I looking at (Audi gods forbid!) new
electronics? Any good hints for troubleshooting or fixing?

Please all, shed some light on this before I get so p***ed-off that the
light tap becomes a large blow...
