re: Perf Exhausts
I can tell you what I know from personal exp. and from what others have
told me.
On my 86 4kq, I have only a single FlowMaster muffler at the rear.
The front muffler on both the 4k and 5k is actually a resonator,
contributing little to flow restriction, but quieting the sound. The
current setup on my 4kq is LOUD and installation is sloppy. Overall I
don't like it much, but suspect it does offer a gain in power. I am
considering replacing what I have with a stock exhaust system, except using
a DynoMax Super Turbo for the rear muffler. The Super Turbo, recommended
to me by Jeffrey Goggin, is supposed to be quieter than the FlowMaster,
but still free flowing. My hope is that by using the stock pipes and
resonator, I'll have a good fitting system, quieter than at present but not
give up any power.
NAPA auto parts is a dealer for DynoMax, btw, so finding a local source
should not be a problem.
The Ultraflow is also made by DynoMax. The difference between it and the
SuperTurbo, based on memory... the Ultra is stainless steel instead of
aluminized steel, it's basically a straight thru design and therefore I
assume louder and maybe will give more power, and the Ultra is more
expensive. I think the price is about $90 vs $30 for the muffler only, and
this is for the universal fit style.
