Re: FOX parts and old Audis
My parents bought an '81 5000S used when the U.A. fiasco was in full swing.
It was, at the time, the finest car we'd ever purchased, and what made it even
sweeter was the price, because nobody at the time wanted anything with an Audi
badge. We bought it from used-car lot in Elizabeth, New Jersey for, if I
remember correctly, about $2000.
The memory that I most cherish about that car was its excellent steering feel.
You could really sense the contact of the front tires through the wheel, and
even though the ultimate grip of the car was limited by a lot of factors, you
could really wield it because the steering was so communicative. It became
even better when the rain fell - it was so easy to gauge the traction of the
front wheels through the steering.
When my grandmother passed away suddenly, we drove that car from northern NJ
to the mountains of Virginia in a little over 4 1-/2 hours, with 4 people
inside. It was very confidence-inspiring over 100mph because of the excellent
steering, its fundamental stability, and feeling of safety. That emergency
trip was what influenced my dad to keep buying Audis.
My '86 5KCSTQ is a better car in almost every way, but it still can't quite
match the steering feel of that old 5000S.
Best Wishes,
Alex
