FIXED! Loud Flowmaster on 4kq
Recently, I replaced the entire exhaust system (cat back) on my 4kq, with
2.5 inch piping and a single 3 chamber flowmaster all the way at the end. I
experienced loss of power on the top end, plus terrible 'raspberries' from
2500-3200 rpms.
I took the car back to the exhasut shop and asked what could be done. They
said that a supertrapp slip-on at the end wouldn't do the trick, as the
noises are coming from the muffler itself. What the did was splice and weld
in a 20 inch glasspack just after the cat. They showed me the glasspack and
honestly believed it was too 'straight-through' as there didn't seem to be
allot of louvers or packing inside. Besides, the overall diameter was very
small. Although that was great for ground clearance, I was certain it
wouldn't do the trick.
To my amazement, it worked great! The raspberries are gone and the ground
clearance wasn't sacrificed at all. As a matter of fact, they dented the
casing a bit so as not to hit the driveshaft carrier bearing, and still hug
the driveshaft. It also sounds great! It now has that mellow, metallic sound
at all rpm's and isn't overly annoying inside or out. It might be just a bit
loud for those who would drive their car allot, but for being my
run-around/ski car, it's perfect. The modification cost me $45 total, on top
of the $200 parts and labor for the original flowmaster system.
