I have been using synthetic oil in my VW beetles for a long time with
complete satisfaction, and I experienced the following with my 85 coupe
quattro witth 2226 ccm non turbo engine with exactly 100 000 miles on
the tacho: I bought the car from my neighbour who tried to spare some
money on oil exchange and put some natural Tamoil stuff in the engine.
When using the car under normal conditions in summer, each time I
stopped at a light, my oil pressure light started to blink signaling low
oil pressure. The oil temp was about 110-120 degrees Celsius. At my
first oil exchange I bought the good old Castrol RS full synthetic oil
with 10W-60 and the problem never occured again. I fully recommend a
good quality synthetic oil especially when one has no oil cooler in the
