I neglected to include a little more information in my previous
post...
The way that the cams are timed in the 1993+ V6 motors is via
a rounded-off diamond-shaped plate which *is* splined/keyed to
the cams. These plates are bolted on in front of the sprockets.
The plates have two holes, at opposing points of the diamond. One
hole is circular, the other oblong. The special Audi tool mentioned
earlier spans the distance between the two cylinder banks and
locks the cams in place with pins that fit into the holes.
Once you've installed the tool, you can loosen the bolts which
hold the sprockets on enough to turn the sprockets as needed to
fit the new belt.
