Well, dry roads are ok, just make sure thatyou arent taking any sharp
turns. It isnt that hard on the driveline, just the tires. (that is
center lock...). If you are on a nice windy dry road, it can be fun to
lock the diff too...it is really a noticable difference. But other than
that, the times when i lock the center diff is anytime that there is any
kind of significant amount of moisture on the roads. That way the road
is slick enough to let the tires scrub, and the center diff helps
stability..
That is just my limited experience...
So pretty much, the road and situation that you were on was a perfect
opportunity...
