I'd been thinking that it was an example of CAD -

Designer #1 "We need to find some free space on the RHD for the clutch m/c"
(Run CAD search)
Designer #2 "The program has identified enough space just here and its
really close to the clutch pedal"

Dont laugh - I've come across worse, like the CAD design for a race car
space-frame chassis that would have required the driver to have major
surgery to allow a cross tube to pass though his chest - at least someone
noticed BEFORE they tried to build it........
