... not too big of a dispute, but I do beg to differ a bit.  AWD with the 
diffs locked does provide some ABS-like capabilities.  That said, I will 
acknowledge that it is only a slight advantage ...

We had the chain discussion to a degree when we had breakfast with Audidudi 
in Santa Cruz.  In general you do need to have a set of chains to show the 
CHP or local officials if asked ... but you don't need to demonstrate that 
they fit the tires!  When I had the urQ in snow on Gatorbacks I did reason-
ably well in the Sierra w/o any traction enhancers, but I did buy one pair
of cable chains and installed them on the front wheels.  I figure that 
since you can lock the center and rear diffs to prevent single wheel 
lockups in the back, so chains weren't absolutely needed.
