crankcase ventilation

I was asked by a friend to look at his quattro 87 turbo. He described
the symptoms as such:
He was late for an appointment so excessive speed was involved (approx
120-130mph held in duration for approx.15 minutes).
after slowing for other traffic he noticed puffs of intermittent blue
smoke.
I immediately assumed something serious such as an oil control ring...
After thinking back to a similar problem with a 16 valve GTI that had
excess oil forced through the emissions (EGR) into the air cleaner, I
decided to look here first.
This was indead the case. -- required cleaning the excess oil from all
parts affected.

My question is this: Why does this occur? The compression test appears
to be normal (could it still be blow-by?) Certainly some of the listers
that travel the autobahn... have had similar experiences or even
auto-crossers.

Long story short. I advised him not to do it again! (speed limit 55)

Thanks in advance and sorry about the bandwidth.
