That could be the switches shown on the schematic - now I have something to look for - unfortunately I thought it would be like a V8 with Separate controls for the rear seats. Thanks for the update.

There is a Doctor in town with a 91 V8 5sp - blue-gray exterior (pardon my color ineptitude ) - gray interior - 60k miles - looks stunning and well cared for. I couldn't wait for him to sell - hence the 200q (which I am enjoying). The doctor will sell soon, he wants a new A6, but relatively unpredictable when he'll break down. He called twice last week (caller id) but didn't leave a message.

There are (at least on some models) microswitches in the rear seats
that prevent them from heating if there is no weight in a given seat.
