locking just the center diff???

At a local audi get together I was talking with a guy that rallies a
5000cstq he said that he just locks the center differential! Now I do not
remember his name ... I am bad with names... But mark Nelson co-drove for
him at the olypia rally...Anyway... he sad that he reversed acouple of
vacume hoses.... has anybody  elso done this???
