RE: oil guage retrofitting

Another similar tactic is to find a two guage panel, with a solid center
guage blank. Then add the diff actuator to the center blank. I used
two red 12V LEDs in this situation for space constraint reasons. No
need to hack the wiring harness with any diff lock relocation projects
either. There are two single connector wiring connections in the center
console to provide the ground signal when the two diffs are locked.
Supply 12V two your relocated lights, LED's or whatever and let these
two connectors provide the ground when applicable...

One note when relocating the diff switch to the heated switch blank area
on an early 4kq or Ur-q, as Dan and I have done, and Dan describes
below. Usually these mods require that one diff panel be sacrificed for
the pull shaft detent and vacuum switch mechanism, but they're cheap
and available from the dealer. Also, when you epoxy the mechanism to
the back of the driver side lower panel, align the vacuum hoses so they
downward, though it may be possible to do the mod without vacuum line
extensions and have the lines pointing upwards. Reason being, if they
are aiming upwards you'll find the lines and a heater vent duct try to
occupy the same space upon reassembly. Moral is: Dan wasn't kidding
when he suggested vacuum line extensions (or replacing with longer
lines).

One other detail point. If you also purchase a decal from the dealer,
or
cut up the one you had, you can maintain the decal identification
aspect.
I tend to use the decal from the center diff half. I place the actuator
shaft
through the existing center diff light hole, and place new holes to the
side
of the front and rear tires for new indicators...

HTH, have fun cutting holes in perfectly good pieces of interior...
