Dave,
I have an 88 5ktq. And I couldn't beliee the trouble necessary to
replace the air filter. I asked my neighborhood Audi professional how to do
it expecting he would know exactly what major component needed to be removed
to replace it. He just laughed and told me there was no trick, it was in
fact the pain in the butt that I had predicted. But gave me a couple of
hints.
The process I use: I remove the window wash reservoir, (your hand can
get to the air filter housing clips through the rear). Remove the metal
turbo pipe that goes over the top of air filter housing(may or may not be
necessary but gives a little more breathing room). Remove the air filter
intake tube(ya, that glued on heat shield tape also). Remove the jump start
battery terminal post.
Unclip the housing clips and pull the box forward. Wiggle it nicely
until it opens up the farthest. There should be enough space to pull the air
cleaner out.

The shortest distance between two points is always to remove all the
major components first.

Have fun!
