You _have_ checked the oil level in your diff?
The symptoms you describe are exactly similar to the ones I
experienced with my "new" '87 5kcd. Annoying, but not critical, I
thought - until I discovered that all the diff. oil had leaked into
the transmission, causing both to be destroyed.
