The QFOM(important announcement for all list members)
Hello all! It seems that I'm one step closer towards getting the promised
Faq-O-Matic set up!
So close, that I'm confident I can let everyone loose on it :)
For those of you who forgot or were not around or missed my message back in
the summer, the Faq-O-Matic is a web site which can be added to and
modified by all users. The idea is that the list members(and others) add
material to the site, piece by piece, until a rather comprehensive FAQ is
built and kept current.
All of the modification stuff requires that you enter an email address, so
that everyone knows who to yell at if they mess something up :) (or heap
praise on said person if they expell eloquent words of wisdom.) Don't
worry; NONE of it is "harvested." It's there for authentication purposes
ONLY.
Please try to follow the categories I've created(you need to be a special
person anyways to modify category stuff, but that may change later on down
the road.) If you don't see the right category for your stuff, email
me(dikemanb@stu.beloit.edu, please; I'm having problems with my other
addresses)
You may see "brett@localhost":this is me. Don't use that link to email me;
it will try to send email to a user "brett" on your system. Sorry.
The FOM uses RCS(revision control system) so your changes can be undone,
but still please show reserve before messing with something that's already
there(ie, Play Nice :)
the URL, for now, is:
http://pdikeman.ne.mediaone.net/cgi-bin/fom
(case sensitive!)
If you like to add/change stuff often, then I would suggest bookmarking the
main page _after_ you add something(because the FOM script adds
authentication/identification tags to the URL, making your life easier!)
Using the navigation links all around instead of your browser's
back/forward buttons will make life easier for you.
I am looking for a few volunteers, preferably the most experienced members
of the list, to help do more heavy-duty stuff like organization of
categories; you will need to set up an account through the FOM site, and
then email me.
Please note that I'm adding categories and stuff as fast as I can and when
I get free time, so please fill in what you can, and check back later. Due
to the nature of the FOM, it is something that will always remain a work in
progress.
I've got a nickname for the Quattro Faq-O-Matic...QFOM. Nice and short.
Suggested for use, like "go check the QFOM, you silly person" when emailing
someone regarding their question about "how to speed up my 5000" :)
Hopefully, the QFOM will help reduce repetative traffic on the mailing list
and provide a useful resource to all. If you have a link to list archives
or the list page on your homepage, please make a link to the QFOM.
Note, when refering someone to an answer in the QFOM, use the URL given by
a search using the FOM search engine. This makes it easier if the "answer"
moves. Trust me :)
Enjoy,
Brett Dikeman
PS:comments welcome!
PPS:I don't get q-list traffic right now(for now.) Please don't expect me
to see something about the QFOM if you post to the list!
